Symmetric vs. Asymmetric — Which Should You Choose?
Symmetric lifts have posts positioned so the swing arms extend equally forward and rearward. Weight distribution is centered — best for trucks, SUVs, and vans that place more weight on the front axle. Also easier when the vehicle sits between the posts (the posts are your reference).
Asymmetric lifts rotate the posts about 30° so the front swing arms are shorter than the rear. The vehicle sits forward of center, letting the driver door and front doors open past the post — critical for cars where the door swings out far (most sedans and sports cars). Downside: less ideal for heavy trucks/SUVs where the weight distribution shifts more.
Rule of thumb: If you mainly work on cars and SUVs → asymmetric. If you mostly work on trucks and vans → symmetric. If you work on everything → look for or adjustable-width models like the XPR-10AS-LP that give you both options .
Floor Plate vs. Clearfloor
Floor plate lifts have a drive-over bar at floor level connecting the two posts. Cheaper, lower ceiling requirement (down to ~10 ft), but the floor bar limits your ability to roll a floor jack, transmission jack, or oil drain freely under the vehicle.
Clearfloor lifts move the cross-beam to the TOP of the posts (overhead), leaving the floor between the posts completely clear. Professional standard. Requires higher ceiling (~12 ft minimum for standard-height models, 14 ft+ for high-rise). Higher price. Every serious shop uses clearfloor for a reason — you can walk, roll a jack, drag a hose, or spread out with a transmission cart without tripping over the floor bar.
Rule of thumb: If your ceiling is under 10 ft or you're only doing occasional oil changes/tire work → floor plate is fine. If you're doing real mechanical work, transmissions, exhaust work, or brake systems → clearfloor.
Capacity — How Much Do You Actually Need?
9,000-10,000 lb — covers all passenger cars, SUVs, and half-ton trucks (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500). Fine for 99% of home garage and independent shop needs.
12,000 lb — three-quarter-ton trucks (F-250, 2500 series), full-size SUVs (Suburban, Excursion), and sprinter/transit vans. Good "future-proof" capacity for a home garage where the vehicle mix might change.
15,000 lb — heavy-duty duallys, larger commercial vans, and light commercial trucks. Overkill for home garages, essential for shops that regularly work on heavy trucks.

Ceiling Height
Match the lift's overall height (the top of the cross-beam or overhead structure) plus 8-12" for cable/hydraulic clearance to your ceiling. Standard 10K lifts run 143-168" overall (12-14 ft ceiling minimum). High-rise 10K models are 175-192" (15-16 ft ceiling). Floor-plate lifts need less overhead but leave the floor bar in the way. If your ceiling is under 10 ft, look at the MaxJax M7K which has no overhead beam at all.
Installation — What You Need to Know Before Buying
2-post lifts require a 4-inch minimum concrete slab reinforced to at least 3,000 PSI compressive strength. Older residential garage slabs are often only 3-4" and unreinforced — that's not always enough. Get a concrete inspector to core-drill and confirm before buying if you're unsure. Anchor bolts go through the slab (typically 4-5" long); once installed, moving the lift means drilling new holes.
Electrical: most 10-12K lifts run on 220V single-phase (dryer plug, 30-amp circuit). Some 15K+ commercial models require 3-phase. Check the spec sheet before you buy — retrofitting single-phase to three-phase in a home garage is expensive.
Safety Features to Look For
Dual-point mechanical safety locks on both posts — non-negotiable. The lift should mechanically lock in position at 6-12" intervals so a hydraulic failure can't drop the vehicle.
Automatic arm restraints — locks the swing arms in position under load so they can't swing free during work.
ALI Certification — the Automotive Lift Institute independently tests and certifies lifts to ANSI/ALCTV safety standards. Every BendPak XPR is ALI-certified. Some brads are ETL/CE certified but not always ALI. If ALI certification matters for insurance or shop-code ensure you pick a lift that meets that standard.
