About Speed Bumps & Speed Humps · Buying Guide · FAQ

A speed bump is a short, tall traffic-calming device (typically 3-4 in. high, 12-24 in. long) that forces vehicles to slow to 2-5 mph. A speed hump is a longer, gentler version (3-4 in. high, 10-14 ft long) that slows traffic to 15-20 mph — better for driveways and residential streets. This page shows every speed bump and rubber speed hump PSE stocks from Checkers Safety — 4 ft and 6 ft modular sections in recycled rubber (Easy Rider®, Alley Bump) and recycled plastic (Deluxe series), all in high-visibility yellow with black end caps. Perfect for parking lots, warehouse yards, campus roads, private driveways, and truck loading areas. Ships direct from Checkers Safety. Speed bump vs speed hump — which do you need?

Device Traffic Speed After Best For
Speed bump (12-24 in. long) 2-5 mph Parking lots, warehouse yards, private drives, near loading docks
Speed hump (10-14 ft long) 15-20 mph Residential streets, campus roads, longer driveways

Rule of thumb: If cars will hit it going faster than 20 mph, use a speed hump — hitting a speed bump at 25 mph damages suspensions and creates injury liability. Use a bump only where traffic is already approaching slowly.

Material choice — rubber vs recycled plastic

  • Recycled rubber (Easy Rider®, Alley Bump) — flexible, quieter under tires, better cold-weather performance, popular for parking lots and residential driveways. Non-marking.
  • Recycled plastic (HDPE) (Deluxe series) — stiffer, longer service life on high-traffic industrial roads, UV-stable, doesn't compress over time.

Installation — asphalt vs concrete

All Checkers speed bumps and humps install with the same hardware — steel spike hardware (for asphalt) or lag bolt kits (for concrete), sold separately. A typical 4 ft section installs with 4 fasteners per section — one at each corner. Two people, 15 minutes per section.

See our 14" Galvanized Rebar Spikes for asphalt and 6" Lag Bolt / Washer / Anchor Kits for concrete.

FAQ

What is the difference between a speed bump and a speed hump?
A speed bump is short (12-24 in. long) and steep — forces cars to 2-5 mph. Use it in parking lots and short driveways. A speed hump is much longer (10-14 ft) and gentler — slows cars to 15-20 mph. Use it on residential streets and campus roads where 20 mph is acceptable. Hitting a speed bump at 25 mph damages vehicles.

Are Checkers speed bumps rubber or plastic?
Both. Easy Rider® and Alley Bump are recycled rubber (softer, quieter, better in cold weather). Deluxe series is recycled plastic HDPE (stiffer, longer service life on industrial roads). Both come in high-visibility yellow with black end caps.

What size speed bump do I need for a driveway?
For a residential driveway 12-20 ft wide, use two 6 ft rubber speed bumps (or one 6 ft + one 4 ft) side by side. Chain the modular sections together with the included connectors. For commercial driveways, use two or three 6 ft sections in the Deluxe (plastic) series.

How do I install a speed bump on asphalt vs concrete?
On asphalt, use 14" galvanized rebar spikes driven with a sledge (comes as an accessory kit). On concrete, use 6" lag bolt / washer / anchor kits (also sold as accessories). Four fasteners per 4 ft section — one at each corner. Takes two people about 15 minutes per section.

Can speed bumps damage cars going the correct speed?
No — speed bumps rated 2-5 mph pose no vehicle damage at that speed. Damage happens when drivers hit bumps at 15+ mph. If your traffic naturally moves faster than 10 mph, install a longer speed hump instead.

Do I need signage with speed bumps?
Yes for parking lots and public-facing driveways — a "SPEED BUMP AHEAD" sign 30-50 ft before the bump is standard for liability protection. Check state and local codes — many require MUTCD-compliant signage on any traffic-calming installed on a public-access road.
