Types of Tube Notchers

Hole-saw notchers — a hole saw of the same OD as the mating tube is angled and plunged into the workpiece to remove a fishmouth cut. Best for: shops with variable diameters (swap the saw), tight cost-conscious builds. Baileigh's TN-210H and vice-mounted or bench-top hole-saw models start here. Downsides: saws wear, cut speed is slower.

Abrasive-belt notchers — a rotating abrasive belt grinds the fishmouth. Best for: production shops running the same diameter repeatedly (roll cages, exhaust manifolds), stainless and hardened tubing that hole saws struggle with. Sizing: pipe schedule vs tube OD

A common buyer mistake is confusing pipe schedule with tube outside diameter. A "1-inch schedule 40 pipe" is actually 1.315" OD — so a hole saw notcher sized for "1-inch tube" will NOT fit 1-inch schedule 40 pipe. Match your notcher's capacity to your workpiece:

• Round tube: measure OD directly (e.g. 1-1/2" OD roll-cage tube)
• Schedule pipe: use the OD conversion — 1/2" sch40 = 0.840" OD, 3/4" = 1.050", 1" = 1.315", 1-1/4" = 1.660", 1-1/2" = 1.900", 2" = 2.375"

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a tube notcher and a tube bender?

Can a hole saw notcher cut stainless steel?
Yes with a bi-metal M42 hole saw and cutting oil, but a hole saw wears fast on stainless. If you're running >10 stainless notches per day, an abrasive-belt notcher pays for itself within a year in saw savings.

Do I need 3-phase power for a production tube notcher?
Not for most Baileigh single-phase models (110V or 220V 1-phase) — they'll cut all day for the average job shop. 3-phase becomes worth it only when you're pulling 5HP+ on a large abrasive belt (6"+) and running near duty cycle.

Which notcher for chromoly roll cages?
Eccentric-cut end-mill notchers (Baileigh TN-250 / TN-800) are the industry standard for chromoly — the end mill leaves a cleaner burr-free finish than a hole saw and cuts thick-wall tubing without deflection. Race-shop-grade tools.
