Tube & Pipe Bender Buying Guide

Bender Type

Rotary-draw benders are the workhorses — they use a die and follower bar to draw tube around a fixed radius. Best for tight-radius, wrinkle-free bends in tube and Schedule-40 pipe. Choose manual for occasional low-volume work, hydraulic for daily shop use, or CNC/touch-screen for production runs with 170+ stored programs.

Ring rollers & pinch-roll benders curve stock over three rolls to make hoops, arches, and large-radius bends in square tube, round bar, angle iron, and pipe profile. Great for handrails, roll cages, canopies, and architectural work.

Mandrel benders (MB-350, MB-4X2) insert an internal mandrel into the tube during the bend to prevent wrinkling and ovality — the standard for exhaust, roll cage, and headers where a clean bend matters more than speed.

Max Bend Degree

90° — compression exhaust benders and simple line benders. Enough for most exhaust turnouts and single-plane brake lines.

180° — manual line benders and entry-level rotary-draw machines. Good for U-bends and most exhaust work.

195° — Baileigh's professional rotary-draw benders (RDB-150, RDB-250, RDB-325, RDB-350, RDB-480, RDB-500) all reach 195° so you can bend past 180° in one pass, essential for roll cage work.

Full rotation (360°) — ring rollers, pinch-roll benders, and profile benders form continuous curves and full circles.

Tube vs. Pipe vs. Profile Capacity

Match the machine to your largest planned stock. Tube capacity is measured by OD × wall thickness; pipe by Schedule (40 is standard). Rotary-draw benders spec both — the RDB-150 handles 2" Sch-40 pipe / 2" tube; the RDB-500 goes to 3" pipe. Ring rollers spec by profile — square tube 2"×2", round bar 1-1/4", angle iron 2"×2"×1/4" are common.

What's the difference between a tube bender and a pipe bender?
Tube and pipe use different sizing standards — tube is sized by OD (outside diameter) and wall thickness; pipe is sized by nominal ID and Schedule. Most rotary-draw benders can handle both if you have the right die set. The Baileigh RDB series ships with die sets sized for common tube and Sch-40 pipe combinations.

Do I need mandrel bending for exhaust work?
For finish-quality automotive exhaust (headers, cat-back systems), yes — a mandrel prevents the inside of the tube from collapsing on tight-radius bends. For DIY / repair exhaust work or heavy-truck exhaust where minor ovality is acceptable, a compression exhaust bender is faster and much cheaper.

What tube diameter can I bend?
Depends on the machine. Entry-level manual benders handle 3/8"–3/4" for brake and fuel line work. Hobby-shop rotary-draw benders (RDB-100) go to 1-3/4". Pro shops need the RDB-150 (2" tube) to RDB-500 (3" pipe) range. Check each product's capacity specs.

What's the difference between the Baileigh exhaust bender and the rotary-draw benders?
The Compression Exhaust Bender/Swager is a specialized machine for muffler and exhaust shops — includes an integrated swager for reducing/expanding pipe ends. Rotary-draw benders are more versatile (bend tube AND pipe with the right dies), reach 195°, and produce cleaner finished bends, but they don't include a swager. Muffler shops usually own both.
