From cleaning to mirror finish
Start with extra coarse and coarse non-woven discs to strip rust, paint and heat tint without removing base metal, move to medium and fine for blending and a consistent satin finish, and finish with felt, polishing discs and paste for a bright or mirror finish. Finishing drums and convolute wheels on a finishing tool give a straight-line brushed finish on tube, rail and sheet.
FAQ
What is a surface conditioning disc?
A surface conditioning disc is made from open non-woven nylon fibre with abrasive grain. It cleans and finishes without gouging, so it removes rust, oxidation and weld discoloration while leaving the base metal intact.
Which grade gives a satin finish on stainless steel?
A medium or fine non-woven grade gives a uniform satin or brushed finish on stainless. Use coarse first if there are deeper scratches or heat tint to remove.
How do I get a mirror finish on stainless?
Work through progressively finer abrasives, then switch to a felt or polishing disc with polishing paste. Each step must remove the scratches from the step before it.
What tool do I need for finishing drums?
Finishing drums mount on a pipe and tube finishing tool or a drum sander with the matching arbor (commonly 5/8-11). They produce a linear brushed finish on rails, tube and flat stock.
