Filtration, CO monitoring or an ambient pump?

Clean air boxes and filtration panels take compressed air from a shop or tow-behind compressor and remove water, oil, particulates and odors to Grade D breathing air, then split it to one or more respirator outlets. Most include a CO monitor with an alarm. Airline filters are simpler point-of-use filters with a regulator and outlets. CO monitors add carbon monoxide alarming to an existing filter. Ambient (free) air pumps draw clean outside air with no compressor at all, for low-pressure hoods and masks only.

FAQ

How many workers can a clean air box or filtration panel supply?
Add up the air each respirator needs (a blast helmet or loose-fitting hood typically uses 6 to 15 CFM) and choose a panel whose CFM rating and outlet count cover the whole crew. Bullard CABs come in 15, 30, 50 and 100 CFM with 1 to 8 outlets; Allegro panels supply 1 to 12 workers.

Do I need a CO monitor on my breathing air system?
OSHA 1910.134 requires a high-temperature or CO alarm, or both, when an oil-lubricated compressor supplies breathing air, and CO must stay at or below 10 ppm for Grade D air. A 5 ppm alarm gives an earlier warning and is common on blasting and painting jobs.

What is the difference between 10 PPM and 5 PPM Clean Air Box models?
The number is the carbon monoxide level at which the built-in CO monitor alarms. Both meet Grade D limits; 5 PPM models alarm sooner.

When is an ambient air pump enough instead of a filtration panel?
Ambient air pumps suit low-pressure respirators, such as hoods and masks used for painting, tank cleaning and confined spaces, where clean outside air is available. They do not supply enough pressure for blast helmets, and the intake must be placed away from engine exhaust and contaminants.
