How to Apply & Spray Sherwin Williams® Emerald® Paint
Sherwin Williams® produces a variety of quality paints for products ranging from vehicles to homes to cabinets. For cabinet painting, Sherwin Williams® Emerald® paint is a durable high quality cabinet finish, given that when you paint cabinets your goal is a smooth finish usually, spraying is the ideal way to get a good finish but you can also use a roller if you prefer. In this guide will cover the different options you have to apply Sherwin Williams® Emerald® Paint so you can determine which method will be best for your project.
Spraying Sherwin Williams® Emerald® Paint
As we mentioned for the finest finish, spraying Sherwin Williams® Emerald® Paint will provide the smoothest finish. If your working on repainting your kitchen cabinets you will want to consider spraying. Emerald® can be sprayed easily using either an airless paint sprayer or HVLP spray gun. If you want to better understand HVLP vs Airless and decide which is best for you check out our guide here.
Spraying Sherwin Williams® Emerald® with HVLP
To Spray Emerald® with HVLP you can use either a compressed air or turbine HVLP spray gun, more on the differences between the two here.
To spray with a HVLP turbine you can use a 4 or 5 stage Turbine, a 3 stage turbine can work as well but will typically require the paint to be thinned a bit, usually at least 10 percent. For gloss or semi gloss you can use a number 3 tip set which is a 1.3 for satin usually a 4 set (1.8mm tip) is ideal. If you find a set is not allowing you to get material out of the spray gun bump the tip to the next largest size. If your getting runs while spraying you can try to go with a smaller tip size.
Compressed Air HVLP Spray Gun
For a compressed air HVLP spray gun you can go with a gravity feed or pressure pot. A pressure pot will provide greater control when spraying Emerald while a Gravity feed HVLP Spray gun will be easier to clean up.
Spraying Sherwin Williams® Emerald® with Airless Paint Sprayers
If your new to painting or have other projects you want to work on like painting a fence or interior then an airless sprayer will be more versatile than the HVLP. In addition an airless sprayer is easier to get a good finish as you won’t need to thin the material. Sherwin Williams® Emerald® can be sprayed using an airless. Ideally you should use a fine finish low pressure airless tip to ensure the smoothest finish. You can use a 309, 313 or 315 tip to give you a good controlled pattern. For larger surfaces the 315 will be ideal while for smaller surfaces like trim a 309 will be a great option. You can usually spray Emerald® at a low pressure around 2000 PSI with an airless, this will help cut down on overspray.
