Known for its versatility and reliability, a No. 4 smoothing plane has been smoothing and finishing flat surfaces for over a hundred years.
Smoothing planes are known for being some of the shortest in the Stanley numbering system.
At 10" long and 2" wide, the No. 4 is well-suited for a wide range of tasks, including smoothing rough lumber, truing edges, and removing imperfections in finished wood.
The wider the plane, the more effort is required to push the blade through the material because more of the blade is engaged with the wood.
The body and frog are made from accurately machined graded ductile cast-iron, with the sides and sole being fully ground.
The set on a good smoothing plane can be altered from coarse to extremely fine by using the frog adjustment.
A fully machined fit between frog and body ensures absolute stability of the frog, providing a firm and solid surface for the cutting iron.
The accuracy of this mechanism allows for the cutting iron to be advanced to give a virtually "zero" mouth opening. This allows for the finest shavings–even on the most difficult of woods.
The blade is made from high carbon steel, hardened and tempered to 60-62 Rockwell C, and precision ground to 3mm thick.
The single-piece design of the cap iron offers rigid clamping.
