📖 Learn about lacquer spray guns — wood vs automotive, tip sizes, HVLP vs conventional, and FAQ

Wood, cabinet, and furniture lacquer

Wood lacquer (nitrocellulose, pre-cat, post-cat, conversion varnish) sprays best through a 1.3-1.5 mm tip with an HVLP gravity or siphon-fed gun. The medium-sized tip lets you push enough material through to build finish quickly on doors, cabinets, and large flat panels without runs, but atomizes fine enough for a smooth lay-down.

  • C.A. Technologies LYNX (L100C series) — the reference gun for cabinet-shop lacquer. Multiple tip sizes (1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.8) and needle/nozzle combos.
  • C.A. Technologies Panther (P100G) — Teflon-coated gravity gun, ideal for waterborne lacquers as well as solvent-based.
  • Iwata W-77 series — siphon-fed general-purpose gun; if you're already running a compressor with adequate CFM, the W-77 handles every lacquer you'll throw at it.
  • Binks Trophy HVLP Gravity — the mid-range workhorse; predictable atomization, easy to clean.
  • Binks 2100 Conventional — the versatile classic. With the right needle/nozzle (63BSS or 66SS for lacquer), it handles both siphon and pressure feed.

Automotive lacquer & clear coat

Automotive lacquer (mostly acrylic lacquer today) demands finer atomization than wood work — you're spraying thinner material at lower film build, and orange peel or mottling is unforgiving on a car panel. That means 1.0-1.3 mm tips, HVLP gravity feed, and premium fine-finish gun bodies.

  • DeVilbiss TEKNA (Basecoat, Prolite, Copper) — the industry-standard refinish gun with lightweight ergonomics and premium atomization.
  • DeVilbiss GTi Pro Lite — clear-coat specialist; smooth flow-out even on plastics.
  • DeVilbiss FLG (Finishline Gravity) — best-value fine-finish gravity gun. Great for shops doing occasional refinish work.
  • Iwata WS-400, LPH-400, LPH-80 — Japan-engineered HVLPs known for exceptional atomization on clear coats.
  • C.A. Technologies Jaguar J100H — HVLP low-CFM option for shops with smaller compressors.

High-production lacquer setups (pressure-fed)

Once you're spraying 6+ hours per day and refilling a gravity cup every 15 minutes stops making sense, move to a pressure-fed system: a 2-quart pressure cup or 2.8-gallon pressure pot feeds material to the gun via fluid line, so you keep spraying uninterrupted. The gun stays lighter (no full cup on it), fatigue drops, and consistency improves.

  • 2-quart pressure cup outfits — portable, great for one-operator shops that want the pressure-fed benefits without the pot footprint.
  • 2.8-gallon pressure pot outfits — for full production shifts; a single pot fill lasts most of a day.
  • C.A. Technologies Bobcat B14 / Cougar C14 outfits — production-ready packages with pot, hose, gun, and regulator; solvent or waterborne configurations.

Picking the right tip size

  • 1.0 mm — automotive clear coat, high-end fine finish, thinned lacquer
  • 1.2 mm — automotive base coat, fine wood finish, sealer coats
  • 1.3-1.4 mm — general-purpose lacquer; the "if in doubt" tip for wood cabinet finishing
  • 1.5-1.8 mm — high-build lacquers, stains, and primers; move up if you're getting runs from thicker material

Frequently asked questions

What tip size do I need for spraying lacquer?
For general wood/cabinet lacquer (nitrocellulose, pre-cat, conversion varnish): 1.3-1.5 mm. For automotive lacquer clear coat: 1.0-1.3 mm. For high-build lacquers and primers: 1.5-1.8 mm. When in doubt on cabinet work, 1.4 mm is the safest starting tip.

HVLP or conventional spray gun for lacquer?
HVLP is standard for lacquer today — it wastes less material (65% transfer efficiency vs. ~35% for conventional), reduces overspray, and meets most VOC compliance rules. Conventional guns are still used in high-volume production where speed matters more than material savings. If you're spraying occasionally or trying to comply with EPA/local air-quality rules, choose HVLP.

Do I need a pressure-fed gun for lacquer, or is gravity feed enough?
Gravity feed (cup on top) is fine for most shops — simpler, cheaper, less air consumption. Move to pressure-fed (cup or pot) when: (a) you're spraying more than 4-6 hours a day and cup refills are slowing you down, (b) you're spraying overhead or in tight orientations where gravity feed can't deliver material, or (c) fatigue from carrying a full cup is a real issue.

Which lacquer spray gun is best for cabinet shops?
The C.A. Technologies LYNX (L100C series) is the reference wood-cabinet lacquer gun — it's consistent, easy to rebuild, and available with the exact tip sizes cabinet shops need (1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.8 mm). Iwata W-77 (siphon) is a close second if you're on the Iwata platform. For premium fine-finish work, DeVilbiss TEKNA or Iwata WS-400 give you the smoothest lay-down.

Can I spray waterborne lacquer with the same gun as solvent-based?
Only if the gun has Teflon-coated or stainless-steel wetted parts. Water corrodes carbon steel — standard Binks 2100 solvent-configured guns will pit and contaminate finish. The C.A. Technologies Panther (Teflon-coated) is the standard "shoots both" option; DeVilbiss GTi Pro Lite and Iwata WS-400 stainless are also fine on waterborne.
