How to Apply and Use Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Paint
Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Paint is known for its remarkable paint and primer combination which offers excellent coverage and durability. This guide will walk you through the steps needed to use Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Paint to achieve professional results.
Step 1: Preparation
Tools and Materials
Before starting, gather all the necessary tools and materials:
- Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Paint
- Paint rollers and trays
- Angled brushes for cutting-in
- Painter’s tape
- Drop cloths or plastic sheets
- Ladder
- Paint stirrer
- Bucket and a paint screen (for large areas)
Surface Preparation
The surface you are painting must be clean, dry, and free of loose paint, dirt, grease, or any other contaminants. For exterior projects you may need to pressure wash to remove dirt oil and grease. You can use a mild detergent and water for cleaning. If there is old, loose paint, use a scraper or wire brush to remove it. Any cracks or holes should be patched, and if painting on drywall, make sure it's sanded smoothly. For wood surfaces clean and sand the wood, for smooth and glossy surfaces scuff sand to roughen the surface. For stucco plaster and masonry ensure you allow 30 days to cure before painting. Application of Behr Ultra® should be when substrate and air temperatures are between 35 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 4 hours after paint has been applied. Do not apply if rain is expected as well.
Step 2: Tape and Cover
Apply painter’s tape to edges, trim, and any areas you don’t want to be painted. Make sure the tape is pressed down firmly. Next, lay down drop cloths or plastic sheets to protect floors and furniture from paint splatters.
Step 3: Prime (If Necessary)
One of the benefits of Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Paint is that it’s paint and primer in one. However, if you are painting over a darker color with a lighter one, or painting a porous or repaired surface, you may want to consider using a separate primer for better coverage and adhesion.
Step 4: Mix the Paint
Open the paint can and use a paint stirrer to mix the paint thoroughly. If using more than one can of the same color, it's a good idea to combine them in a larger bucket to ensure color uniformity. Stire paint occasionally throughout paint project to ensure material remains mixed well.
Step 5: Cutting-In
Using an angled brush, paint around the edges of the wall (the areas that the roller can't reach). This technique is called “cutting-in.” Hold the brush so that the bristles are in contact with the surface and the metal ferrule is angled away from it. Apply paint in a smooth, controlled manner.
Step 6: Option A - Paint Walls or Exterior
Pour some paint into the roller tray. Attach a roller to the roller handle and roll it into the paint, making sure it’s evenly coated. Start at the top corner of the wall and roll the paint in a “W” or “M” pattern, filling in the spaces as you go. This technique helps in spreading the paint evenly. Work in small, 3-foot by 3-foot sections, ensuring that the edges remain wet so you can maintain a wet edge, which helps avoid visible lines as you overlap the sections. For semi smooth surfaces use a high quality 3/8 or ½ inch nap roller.
For exterior paint an airless sprayer will be a great option or you can use a roller. If painting vinyl ensure your color choice is the same or lighter than the existing color.
Step 6: Option B - Spray Walls and Ceiling or Exterior
For large open areas or new construction you may want to consider using an airless sprayer. An airless sprayer will make painting go much quicker . For Behr Ultra® it is recommended to use a 15 to 21 thousands tip. For interior walls a 517 will be a great tip for exteriors a 519 will be a good option. For trim you may want to use a 315 tip. When using an airless you shouldn’t need to thin the paint but if you do thin the paint do not thin more than ½ pint per gallon.
Recommended Airless Sprayers
Step 7: Second Coat
Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Paint usually covers well with one coat, but sometimes a second coat is necessary for the perfect finish. Allow the first coat to dry for the time recommended on the can (usually 2-4 hours), then repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the second coat.
Step 8: Clean-Up
Remove the painter's tape before the paint is completely dry to prevent peeling. Clean brushes, rollers, and trays with soap and water for water-based paints, or use paint thinner for oil-based paints.
Step 9: Final Inspection
After the paint is dry, inspect your work. Check for even coverage and make sure there are no visible brush strokes or roller marks. Wait 4 weeks before cleaning with non abrasive detergents.
Conclusion:
Using Behr Premium Plus Ultra® Paint is an excellent choice for both professional and DIY painters due to its combined paint and primer properties and the quality finish it provides. Following these steps meticulously will help you ensure a great outcome with your next paint project.
